The church was built on a cruciform plan. It has an impressive length of 93 meters. In the 1914, the fire caused the roof to collapse. The reconstructed roof crowned with a tower, which is in contrast to the eighteenth-century dome better connected stylistically with the rest of the church. 1944 In the northern part of the church it was completely destroyed by a bomb. In 1998 added clockwork in the form of human figures punching hour. It is located on the top of the south transept, above the main southern gate. Despite the damage he suffered during the world wars, the church has a rich collection of works of art. Noteworthy intricately carved screen with the image of Christ and the oak pulpit Baroque moved here from the Abbey of Ninove. Its main theme is a fall from a horse Norbert of Xanten.
One of the oldest buildings is the twelfth-century wooden head, which is the only remnant of the cross burned during the First World War. In the middle of the chancel is the tomb of the Duke of Brabant Henry I died. 1235 of the year (it is the oldest preserved tombstone reigning monarch in the country) and his wife Matilda (d. 1211 r.) And his daughter Marie (d. 1260 r.). Also Godfrey II is buried in the church. In 1998 the sanctuary and infirmary converted into a museum vault. It is here we can admire the finest works of art. These are two triptychs Dirk Bouts (1415 r. - 1475 r.) Flemish primitivist (pupil Rogier van der Weyden), Last Supper (1464 r. - 1468 r.) And the martyrdom of St. Erasmus (1465 r.). Great Bouts paintings depict religious scenes, filled by rigid, delicate figures, giving the impression of outstanding still. Works Bouts resold several times. Eventually, they were sent to a German museum. After World War I, Germany was forced to return the triptych. During World War II he was taken to one of the salt mines, where safely survived the turmoil of war.

Sint - Geertruikerk - kościół św. Gertrudy budowano
w XIII - XV wieku. |
