Lavaux-Sainte-Anne Castle
One of the most famous buildings in Wallonia. Listed as one of the most important monuments of the Famenne region. Situated near Rochefort in the province of Namur. The first mention of Lavaux appeared in 1244. At that time, Jacques de Wellin de la Vaux built a simple tower to monitor the Roman road Bavay-Nassogne. The history of the castle was particularly marked by two owners, Jean II de Berlo and Jacques Renard de Rouveroit.
The rule of the former fell in the 15th century. A period of stormy battles between Liege and the Duchy of Burgundy. In 1450 the castle of Lavaux-Sainte-Anne was designed to repel attacks by enemies. Round towers with arches, a drawbridge and everything was surrounded by a moat were built. In 1630 the Renaissance, Baron Jacques Renard de Rouveroit transformed the fortress into a Renaissance residence. The northern curtain wall was demolished, and bell-shaped roofs were added to the towers. A Renaissance gate was also built.
Museums in the Castle of Lavaux-Sainte-Anne
In the 32 decorated rooms of the castle there is room for three museums, telling the story of life that took place in the castle through the centuries. On the ground floor, the Museum of the Life of the Lords presents an extraordinary collection of antique furniture, a Romanesque bathroom, a chapel, a dining room, a beautiful fireplace and the rooms of the castle's inhabitants. In the basement there is the Museum of Country Life. Here, regional crafts, old tools and warehouses are presented. On the first floor, the Hunting Museum houses an impressive collection of stuffed animals, testifying to the rich fauna of the Famenne region.
This beautiful castle combines medieval and Renaissance architecture. Inside the courtyard you can admire the French gardens. Outside the castle, behind the moat, a wetland with marshes and meadows was created to recreate the typical ecosystem of the Famenne region at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the orchard, where the beehive was placed, there are 52 tall trees. This beautiful area is an oasis of peace, a great place for hiking.
