Built for the EXPO World Exhibition, which took place in 1958 in Brussels. The authors of the construction are engineer Andre Waterkeyn and architects Andre and Jean Polak. Initially, it was planned that the object would only exist 6 months, and after this period it would be demolished. The atomium, which is something between sculpture and architecture, symbolizes the iron particle model, enlarged 165 billion times.

The 102 meter high structure consists of nine steel balls, with a diameter of 18 meters each, and connecting corridors. Each of them is 23 meters long and 3 meters in diameter. From the windows of the highest sphere, from a height of 92 meters, you can see the panorama of Brussels, as well as Mini Europe, which is a park of miniatures of the most beautiful cities in Europe, which is located in nearby Bruparc. In good weather, you can also see Antwerp.
Of the nine balls that make up this structure, five are available to visitors. The first two contain a permanent exhibition dedicated to EXPO 58, the other three are reserved for temporary exhibitions. The restaurant at the top of the Atomium is open until 23.00.
