Laarne Castle
It is one of the most beautiful and best preserved water castles in the country. Its history begins in 1294, when a rectangular sandstone building was built on this site on the western side. At the beginning of the 14th century, the building was transformed into a real fortification with a fairly regular pentagonal shape. In 1607, Laarne Castle was the site of the trial of six alleged witches, who were interrogated and tortured. Four of them were sentenced to burning at the stake. The castle's drawing rooms, living rooms, kitchen, knights' hall and prison cells are open to visitors.
In the second half of the 17th century the castle took its final shape. Its new owner Geraard Van Vilsteren transformed the castle from a fortress into a luxurious summer residence. In 1943 the estate was placed under protection as a historical monument. After restoration and furnishing with furniture, works of art and carpets, mainly from the 17th century, the castle was opened to visitors in 1967. In 1953 the estate was donated by Count Ribaucourt to the Royal Association of Historical Cities and Gardens of Belgium.

Laarne Castle Collection
The extraordinary collection of silverware on display at the castle, comprising five hundred objects, is one of the largest in Belgium. The oldest exhibit dates back to 1551, the newest to 1931. Most of the objects were created in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. However, the treasures of Claude D'Allemagne's collection were brought from practically all over Europe. Presented in one room, they make an extraordinary impression. The Laarne castle also hosts temporary exhibitions and events.
