Château d'Attre - an 18th-century pearl in the heart of Hainaut
Château d'Attre is a historic estate where noble simplicity meets exquisite detail, and nature and architecture perfectly complement each other. The extensive lawn stretching out in front of the castle enhances the dignity of the estate, blending in with the carefully tended French gardens. A long time ago, a medieval castle stood here, inhabited by the Franeau d'Hyon family, Counts of Gomegnies, court chamberlains. Around 1752, the owners, desiring a residence more befitting their position, built the present palace.
Between 1782 and 1788, the castle became the favorite residence of Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria and her husband Prince Albert, then Governors-General of the Southern Netherlands. Their presence added prestige to the estate. The castle, surrounded by a 17-hectare park, is a delight. elegance without splendor , architectural harmony and an exceptionally well-preserved period interior. In the residence consisting of the main building and two wings, only the ground floor is available for viewing. The owners' family lives on the remaining floors. It is not allowed to take photos of the rooms being visited. Payment for tickets is accepted in cash only.
English-style park - a walk among history and nature
A romantic English-style park is located behind the historic estate. This picturesque area combines the beauty of nature and unique elements of garden architecture. Winding paths and forested corners were created for peaceful walks and reflection surrounded by nature. The Vignou Tower is an ideal vantage point for admiring the landscape. According to legend, it served as a hideout for the robber Vignou. The 18th-century dovecote, in turn, is a testament to ancient utilitarian architecture. In 1788, an artificial grotto was built in the form of ruins. It symbolized the quintessence of 18th-century romanticism, i.e. the relationship between man and nature. The pavilion built at its top served as an observation point during rabbit hunts organized in honor of the annual visit of Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria and her husband.
