Floreffe Abbey – history, architecture and beer
Opactwo Floreffe zostało założone w 1121 roku przez św. Norberta z Xanten, założyciela zakonu norbertanów. Okres prosperity zakończył się wraz z Rewolucją Francuską, gdy większość zakonników opuściła opactwo i udała się na emigrację do Niemiec.

Floreffe's Heritage - 900 Years of History
Floreffe Abbey is one of the most visited sites in Belgium, combining medieval architecture, rich history, and the tradition of brewing beer. Located in Wallonia, the complex attracts both history lovers and tourists interested in local cuisine and Belgian beer. The first stop on the tour is the brewery mill, located in one of several buildings that exemplify medieval industrial architecture. Two 13th-century limestone buildings now house a brewery and restaurant. Local products such as bread and cheese are served here, but above all, the beer brewed at the abbey. Steps behind the brewery lead to the entrance gate, adorned with a statue of St. Norbert. The buildings in the abbey courtyard date back to the 18th century and currently house secondary school classrooms.
Church of the Floreffe Abbey
Behind the eighteenth-century façade of the abbey church lie centuries of history, telling the story of Floreffe Abbey. The chancel and transept were built as early as the 12th century. In the 16th century, a tower was built at the southern arm of the transept, while in the 17th century, the chancel was rebuilt, extending the church to 90 meters. The church's interior is adorned with extraordinary Baroque choir stalls, crafted between 1632 and 1648 by the Namur sculptor Pierre Enderlin. They constitute one of the finest examples of Walloon artistic heritage and depict scenes inspired by the Bible and the history of Christianity.

Individual tour of the abbey grounds: €5 (paper guide available in the brewery restaurant). Tours of the abbey church: take place at € 13.30, €14.30, €16.00, and € 17.00. In July and August, additional tours at € 10.30 and € 11.30. Purchasing a paper guide, which entitles you to a guided tour of the church, costs €8. The abbey also organizes, upon prior reservation, group tours of at least €15 people of the abbey grounds and church, as well as places not accessible through individual tours.
